You Are Welcome Here
San Francisco is a city of beauty, history, and excitement. And at its heart is the University of San Francisco.
When a new campus extension was built, including a new dining hall, it provided an opportunity to brand the space with a mural that celebrated the diversity of the city and its neighborhoods. The dining hall, situated atop SF’s Lone Mountain, featured sweeping vistas of the city from the Pacific Ocean to the Bay.
I was tasked with taking on the massive challenge of illustrating and designing a series of murals that would span over 100 feet of wall space. The artwork is intended to be viewed as one large, flowing piece composed of Bay Area landmarks, moments of community engagement, and messaging key to USF’s missions and values.
A large part of the process involved coordinating with vendors during the site survey to ensure accurate dimensions for the artwork, as well as being on hand during the installation of the vinyl to QC placement of the mural.
The central wall’s illustrations are arranged from West to East, so that the viewer is pointed in the direction of the various landmarks depicted in the artwork. The flowing line work is inspired by San Francisco’s iconic and ever-present fog. The color palette pulls from USF’s green and gold brand colors, but there is an emphasis on white space to allow the dining hall to be open and modern.
Artwork was hand-drawn, digitally colored, and then installed through vinyl panels.
Completed while employed at the University of San Francisco.
